Founded in 1964, they pioneered the Jamaican popular music genre of Ska, which has since grown to encompass various sub-genres including Rocksteady, Reggae, 2tone, Third Wave, Ska-Jazz, Ska-Punk, Ragga, and Dub. With a rich repertoire of instrumentals and an impressive history as the studio backing band for many Jamaican vocalists in the early to mid-60s, including Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Toots and The Maytals, Ken Boothe, Stranger Cole, and Alton Ellis, The Skatalites have paved the way for countless bands that play any derivative of ska or reggae music, such as The Specials, The Police, Hepcat, No Doubt, Sublime, and Slightly Stoopid.
